Hi there! It’s been a while since I last posted something on my website. I have been very busy lately and been going through a difficult time with personal and most of all work life. But I won’t talk about my life here. Had I not gone through a minor surgery on my hand, I thought I will never be able to post again. It’s been 4 days from the day of the surgery and as per the surgeon, I need to practice moving my fingers and my hand so I thought to myself, “Why not exercise my hand by writing a post?”

I haven’t traveled lately. Simply because I decided to use my savings for something life changing. Don’t get me wrong…traveling is still my reward for hard work. I’m pretty sure I’m working hard which is not seen by others. But who cares lol?! So let’s cut the chase.

I’m sure some of you are wondering how am I able to afford traveling to different places when I’m a regular employee with family to support, so many debts and bills to pay and living in a third world country.

I’m a budget traveler but I never forgo comfort and relaxation when I travel. It’s a treat for myself so why should I be cheap on some stuff while I’m on a trip? So, let me share realistic advice on how to save for your next travel.

  • Check out the seat sale. It is exciting to learn that there’s an upcoming promo flight online but you must remember that before you buy tickets, seat sale is not an emergency. You don’t have to necessarily buy tickets. You must consider first your budget for other expenses before buying a cheap ticket. Plane tix is just one of the expenses. But how will you survive your travel when you’re literally broke at the time of you trip? Seat sale will always be there, you just have to remember the dates, holidays and trends so that you know when to expect the next one every year.

Tip: Save from $100 – $2000 for your roundtrip plane ticket depending on your planned destination. Whether you have picked a destination or not, you know that when there’s a promo flight, you have money to use right away to buy the tix! 🙂

  • Think of saving as spending. Your next destination should be your dream travel too. Do you really want to spend most of your stay at super cheap hostels without an assurance that your security and comfort will not be at risk? Or starve yourself to death as long as you got to travel? They say that there is nothing wrong with spending. As long as it gives you comfort and joy, use your money. That is the secret of being abundant. You enjoy your blessing and most especially your money. How much money do you spend on your daily trip to Starbucks? How much do you spend on shoes, shopping, and eat outs? I’m sure you’re asking, “Cheese are you kidding? You just said that I am living in abundance if Ienjoyed spending my money on shopping and my daily dose of jolt from Starbucks. You’re confusing me!” Before you get mad at me, let me continue my statement first. I’m not saying that you let go of these things. But let me remind you that if you repurpose the money you spend on low hanging fruits like these, try to imagine yourself being at your dream destination and having the best time of your life without having to worry about your finances to try new things and splurge a little on experiences that will make your travel memorable? Start saving and maybe consider letting go of some of these to save more. When you save, keep that money untouchable until the day you need it. It’s as if, you’ve already spent that money.

  • Set a realistic amount when you save. Do your research man! Check your desired destination. Check out websites and pins from Pinterest which will provide you of the daily spend on food, price range of accommodation and price range of tours available. From there, set your budget. How much will you need aside from the plane ticket? How muyou need in order to save? Are you sure of the amount you’re saving or do you wish to go back to second bullet and start considering my advice about repurposing some of your expenses? I normally save $50-$100 every payday by cutting down some of my expenses for wants. When I say wants, I can live without it. Haha! I normally give myself 6-12 months to save depending on my desired destination.

  • Cheap or budget stays are not always the best. It is a risk to take. I stay at budget hostels and homestays too only when I just need to stay overnight or waiting for my next flight most especially in a foreign place. Consider the potential outcome if you get sick or being robbed just because you settled for something less…this will actually cost you more. I suggest that you check for reviews first and don’t stay at those places for a very long time. You need to treat yourself too.  There can be cheap accommodations with great reviews, so I suggest you go by those places.

  • Saving time for your travel means less money to spend. When choosing your accommodation, choose the one that’s close to the places you’d like to visit. Plan your itenerary carefully and by doing this, you’ll save more money and plan your budget carefully as this will give you an idea of how much you need to spend. Not only that you save money, you save time too!

  • Meet other people who are traveling the same time as yours. Join social media groups and sign up for Klook or download apps where you can get tours at a lower price. You can save more if you join other travelers who plan to travel the same time you are traveling. Although it is a risk to take, come up with different options by getting discounted tours via Klook or Tripadvisor. It is also fun to meet new people who also travel on a budget. You get to learn more from their experiences and obtain some tips about the places they’ve been to that you haven’t seen yet.

  • Check out the websites of where you can buy food at a lower price. Some buy food at the grocery store and cook it themselves to avoid the trip to restaurants. If you can settle for foods from the grocery store, you save money on tips and a trip to the restaurants. You will have a good projection of how much you will need to spend on food.
